To enable students to function independently in unfamiliar environments

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), founded in 1968 in Geneva, Switzerland, is a recognized leader in the field of international education. It is a non-profit, mission-driven foundation that, as of January 2013, works with 3,515 schools to develop and offer three challenging programs in 144 countries to approximately 1,075,000 students. While the IB programs cultivate internationalism and respect for other cultures, they also adapt to the local environment and allow students to maintain a strong sense of cultural identity. Students are taught to be active learners, well-rounded individuals and engaged citizens, who gain practical experience of being part of an international community.

 

The IBO aims to:

 

  • Provide rigorous and broad-based curricula and assessments
  • Maintain high academic standards common to schools world wide.
  • Allow students to develop individual talents.
  • Foster critical and compassionate thinkers.
  • Open the window of the classroom to the outside world.

  • Facilitate university entrance around the world.


The goal of the entire IB Program is to foster the following ten characteristics in all students, known as the Learner Profile (© INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE ORGANIZAION 2013):

The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.

As IB learners we strive to be:

  • INQUIRERS: We nurture our curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research. We know how to learn independently and with others. We learn with enthusiasm and sustain our love of learning throughout life.
  • KNOWLEDGEABLE: We develop and use conceptual understanding, exploring knowledge across a range of disciplines. We engage with issues and ideas that have local and global signicance.
  • THINKERS: We use critical and creative thinking skills to analyse and take responsible action on complex problems. We exercise initiative in making reasoned, ethical decisions.
  • COMMUNICATORS: We express ourselves condently and creatively in more than one language and in many ways. We collaborate eectively, listening carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups.
  • PRINCIPLED: We act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences.
  • OPEN-MINDED: We critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others. We seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience.
  • CARING: We show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive dierence in the lives of others and in the world around us.
  • RISK-TAKERS: We approach uncertainty with forethought and determination; we work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. We are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.
  • BALANCED: We understand the importance of balancing dierent aspects of our lives intellectual, physical, and emotionalto achieve well-being for ourselves and others. We recognize our interdependence with other people and with the world in which we live.
  • REFLECTIVE: We thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experience. We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development.

The IB learner profile represents ten attributes valued by IB World Schools. We believe these attributes, and others like them, can help individuals and groups become responsible members of local, national and global communities.

 

The IB at Hillcrest High School

At Hillcrest High School, we believe that IB is for ALL students. Therefore we work to provide an individualized program for each student who desires to participate. There are three different IB pathways that students can follow based on their own needs, interests, and goals:

The IB Program at Hillcrest High School is an open enrollment program. Any student who desires to be part of any pathway can choose to do so as long as the pre-requisites listed for any courses are accomplished. There is no application process for the program, only registration and maintenance standards outlined in the HHS IB General Reaquirements and Fee Schedule and the IB Disclosure Statement while participating.
